Independence Means Choices

Most people I talk to don’t love their work. It’s a job. I have one friend who has been with the Post Office for 35 years and hates her job, always has. She can’t wait to retire to do something else. Wow. A 35-year self-imposed prison sentence. It’s the 4th of July. Independence Day. To me, Independence means choices. It means you can choose to do what you love, instead of what you hate.

Here are some of my favorite quotes on this topic.

What is money? A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between, does what he wants to do. Bob Dylan

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now. Chinese Proverb

The two most important days in your life are: the day you were born and the day you find out why. Mark Twain

I would rather die of passion than boredom. Vincent Van Gogh

It’s never too late to be what you might have been. George Eliot

Build your own dreams or someone will hire you to build theirs.  Mark Matteson

The only way to do great work is to love what you do. Steve Jobs

Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of the satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming. John Wooden

Someone just ordered some of my books. I GET to go to the post office today. It’s a joyful task. I’ll visit my friend. Maybe I will bring her a file in a cake. Make it a great Independence Day, or not. Your choice.
